Korean Ginger Tea:
Saengang cha

What's The Big Idea?

Ginger tea is very popular in Korea. It is usually served chilled as a refreshing drink in the summer, but some people believe it is beneficial for fighting colds and flu if served hot.

Shopping List

Here's the list of what you need:

  • 2oz fresh ginger, peeled and sliced
  • 1 orange, peeled and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 2 pears, peeled, cored, and quartered
  • 4oz sugar
  • A few fresh strawberries, sliced (only if serving chilled)

What To Do

  • Place the orange zest and ginger in a medium-sized saucepan with 500ml water, and bring to the boil
  • Simmer for 15-20 minutes
  • Remove from the heat and add the oranges, pears and sugar, mixing well until the sugar is completely dissolved
  • If serving hot, leave to rest for at least an hour, then strain and reheat as needed
  • If serving cold, leave to cool and then refrigerate for at least 3 hours. Strain and serve over ice, garnished with strawberry slices
