Malian Sesame and Honey Sweets:
Meni-Meniyong

What's the big idea?

Here's something a bit different - I certainly can't think of any similar recipes anywhere else in our database. Hopefully these will prove to be a bit of a talking point (in a positive way!) at the end of your Malian meal - or a meal from most other West African countries, for that matter.

Shopping List

Here's the list of what you need:

  • 175g Sesame seeds
  • 300g Honey
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter

What To Do

  • Preheat the oven to 450F/230C
  • Spread the sesame seeds on a baking tray and toast in the oven for about 10-12 minutes. Remove and allow to cool
  • Heat the honey and butter in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it bubbles and starts to darken
  • Stir in the toasted sesame seeds and remove from the heat
  • Spread the mixture onto a buttered baking sheet to a thickness of about ¼ inch/6mm
  • Allow to cool until it is just warm and cut into finger-sized pieces
  • Allow to cool completely and serve
